suck it trebek

alex trebek is a horrible, horrible man. he's an apparent misogynist who thinks he knows everything. we don't think you do, alex. but we still love the Jeopardy! ...and other things too.

i'm going to have to call bullshit...

last night we went to the cavern to see noah "pretty voice" bailey play. now i'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that noah and i do not have very similar music tastes, but he puts together tunes i really enjoy. good stuff. we should have left after his performance, ending the evening on a high note, but no, we decided to stick around for a little bit and check out the next band, sarah reddington. (*note: i'm only providing a link on the off chance that you actually care.) what a godawdful mistake. i'm fairly convinced that they're really a bunch of kids from mesquite who heard that denton was super cool and want to sound like all that alt-more-lou-barlow-than-acutally-country-rock-but-pitchfork-says-it's-the-next-big-thing-so-who-are-we-to-argue-hey-the-theater-fire-rules bands out there. no thanks. i'm gonna have to pass on that one. i can't decide if this new crop of "denton cool" is more or less annoying than the dirty rockers or the art school hipsters. regardless, they're always going to be way cooler than me, know more, have better taste and shittier attitudes than anyone i know....because nothing's ever going to be as cool as denton.

except for growing up and learning that growing a beard is just the denton-boy version of an abercrombie shirt, pearl snaps and all.

That is some fine music journalism right there. Wait, what did Sarah Reddington sound like again?

Normally I wouldn't advise people to use a blog strictly for personal histrionics and public therapy, but really, that's what you should stick to, since you obviously have so many hang-ups.

wow. i just always assumed that when bands put themselves out there, criticism is just sort of an understood part of the industry. but i guess not.

as far as the music journalism comment, i don't think Jen ever claimed to be a music journalist, but her reference to Lou Barlow did give me an idea of the vocals.

to Anon 9:19: I don't know if that comment is to Jen or to both of us, but either way, you're right, I could stand to lose a few pounds. thanks for agreeing with me.

while we're at it, you could use some tact.

hey guys, this is just a blog. it's one person's opinion. (ok, two people's.)

so what did i think sarah reddington sounded like? i'd say they sounded like some friends who got together and tried to start an original band but, perhaps due to a lack of creativity (or possibly confidence), ended up sounding like a mediocre twangy cover band of the rolling stones (the first song), bob dylan (the second song), and the theater fire (the rest of the songs). maybe i just caught them on an off night, but i don't really have a reason to give them a second listen.

How can one stuck up bitch have such a problem with a WHOLE city with a FUN music scene that has some QUALITY bands (Just like Dallas, and every other city in the world) just because she didn't like one band? What a tool.

That's just so weak. And it's all the Observer staff and shit. Hating a whole town? Hating a style of Facial Hair? God, pick your battles, man. All from one bands one set one night.

are you guys done yet?

as i've stated REPEATEDLY, both here and to the myspace messages, this is one girl's opinion. if having an opinion makes me a stuck up bitch and not a random anonymous person, then so be it. if you want the observer staff's opinion, i'd suggest you go over to unfair park, because this isn't it. most of the people i know at the observer love quite a few denton bands, including sarah reddington.

yes, i dislike this band. more so now because of this shit parade. and yes, i dislike the denton holier than thou (as well as the dallas holier than thou and the ft. worth holier than thou....) attitude, but at NO TIME did i ever say or imply that everyone from denton holds that opinion. there are lots of people and bands from denton that i love, so stop acting like i'm hateful and bashing an entire city. i'm speaking for myself about a select group of people, so please don't act like i'm the only person to voice such an opinion, because i know this is going on over at that very same message board that brought you guys here today.

have you guys even taken the time to read any of the other posts here before you decided that we (me in particular) are just a bunch of hatemongers?

i didn't think so.

Well... That doesn't really seem to add up now does it?

<3 Scarlett Reddington

PS. I even started growing a beard since I moved to Denton.

scarlett: where you quote Jen on the "because nothing's ever going to be as cool as denton."...it seems to me that she was referring to the people that think that way, not that denton is uncool. the elipses denote that that was part of a longer sentence.

for the record, i like denton. i've actually been there with jen and watched her like it too. the only city i could prolly say i hate is Austin. (so all you Austin peeps go to town on that one)

oh and hey, so there's no confusion, i don't hate the people of Austin. cause apparently we need to clarify things like that.

while i'm clarifying, this blog is not affiliated with the Dallas Observer.

scarlettt,

again, i was making reference to a particular TYPE of person -- i don't recall any of you guys fitting said description. perhaps a paragraph break would have kept all of this crap from going on.

thanks for editing my statements as you see fit.

So who are you refering to? Who were the rock scene? Who were the artfag hipsters? Who are these oh-so-cool beardos that ruined everything for you?

i'm refering to the ultra elitists of any culture who form (or in some cases follow) a trend and beat it to death in a psuedo-fashionable way. i'm sure that you must have some idea what i'm talking about, given the preconceived ideas you must have which turned my "art school hipsters" label into "artfag hipsters".

and for the record, i seriously doubt any elitist snob would even care about conversations like this. if you say you're not one of these types than i'm sure you're not. if you were, you'd probably be "too cool for school" and wouldn't give a fuck anyway. if i'm not talking about YOU, then stop taking it so personally.

let's just say this again -- it's a blog for fucksake, written by someone who has no influence on you or anything in your life. if you want to pick fights, go ahead, but with all of the explaining and clarifing i've done, i don't know what more you expect to get out of this.
