yes, i broke down and got another dog. couldn't help it - he's just so damn adorable!
one of the trainers at unleashed found him a while back and he had been living at the park waiting for a home, so after picking fights with him for a bit, lucy decided she liked him, so he came home with us for a "trial." yeah, like this wasn't going to stick...

they had been calling him van gogh because some crazy bit his ear off, but after showing interest in a house marathon, he has become my very own wilson. everyone say hi to the new puppy!

starting next week, nerver and i will be keeping in tradition and attending ~~afi dallas~~ the dallas international film festival, so we'll be sure to update you guys with the good, bad, and ugly of it all (or more appropriately the good, the bad and the weird as we'll be checking that out as well...)

For a while now, I've been contributing to Heartless Doll, the Village Voice's ladyculture blog. While it's edgy and covers important lady issues, it also provides its fair share of fun. I've been doing Top 10 lists and reality TV recaps for the most part, and I love it. I encourage you to visit the site. So here's a run down of what's been going on since we've not been paying much attention over here on Alex.

- Jen got a house and graduated from college. Big ups. Huge ups. Especially for the 3.9 GPA. How about a little applause? Yeah, that's right!

- Been working pretty hard and yet hardly working. Dad joke. In honor of John H. Martin's birthday this week, I had to.

- Jake and I got a dog. The handsome Henry. He and Otto are not getting along, but these things take time. He is a rather high energy doggie however, so last night he received his dinner in a snack ball. Roll for kibble, Henry! Otto observed from his roost on top of the refrigerator.

- We have some new blogs to share with you:

Noah W. Bailey's Tha Juggalizer. What's new with you?

UPDATE: Henry was a sweet doggie but we discovered he had a taste for cat tail that couldn't be satisfied even after he unfortunately got a couple of bites of Otto's.
Otto is just fine now. His tail is no worse for the wear and he's calmed down a lot. The animal behaviorist we worked with agreed they could not live together and to return him was the best action, given Otto's traumatic past abuse and having no idea of Henry's early life. We were very emotional about the decision, but it turns out it was for the best because Henry has apparently found an awesome, loving no-kitty home!! I hope he got to take his loofah dog toy with him.

yes, i'll admit it. as an avid bibliophile (which my future movers will attest to, those poor box-carrying souls), i have picked up and put down infinite jest more times than i care to admit. i'm one of those people. i've ended up giving away 3 (i think) copies of the book to people who seemed more determined than myself (i'm pretty sure oliver was the only one who finished), but recently i bought yet another copy in anticipation of infinite summer, the online "really, this time we're going to finish the damn thing" reading group. reading is scheduled (loosely i assume) from june 21 through september 22, averaging an easy peasy 75ish pages a week.

so who's going to join me? and don't give me any of your dumb excuses - i have to move, construct, paint, take a mediation class and graduate during this time and i'm doing it.

nerver is still on the fence, but has her copy ready, just in case....

* nerver relocated to a land far, far away (read: about a 10 minute drive), leaving me to curse most of my neighbors at glendale "melrose place" oaks
* she also had some travel adventures, of which i think she'll have to explain
* i'm one course away from finally getting my degree. my perfect gpa was marred by my inability to give a fuck about art appreciation/ a bastard ex messing with my head, but a 3.8 is good enough...
* said ex has been banished to the 9th circle of hell and i'm currently accepting applications for a replacement
* i'm buying a house - hopefully. (fingers crossed). inspection is tomorrow, so we are potentially on the verge of full-on adulthood
* cami has officially taken the position of best top golfer-female. you'll now be able to find us at top golf practicing at every available moment
* i have a sweet tea addiction that won't quit

Ok, so out comes Microsoft with Songsmith. It's got the world's worst commercial, but give it a break already because the YouTubes are out. of. control. A brief 101: The program allows you to sing a track before it creates backing instrumental and percussion tracks. You can tweak the styles and such but...for real, all that is not the point. The point is that people have already isolated the vocal tracks for well-known songs and synced up new backing tracks thanks to Songsmith. And it's amazing. I lamented the death of the age-appropriate temper tantrum long ago. I remember the sheer, unadulterated release of energy from screaming, crying and flailing various limbs until that first yawn. After that there was no possible way to keep up the physicality of the tantrum, nor the wailing. Then, I'd just (usually) drift off to a solid sleep and awake with nary a care the next morning save for puffy eyes and the occasional sore foot or fist from beating the mattress. Then at age 7 or 8, that got inappropriate. And that totally sucked.

Now, it seems my young mind knew more about relieving stress than my adult one. It is actually beneficial to have a tantrum? Yes! Well, not so much with the pounding fists or the face-in-pillow action, but with short bursts of shouting. I'm all about this.

And if you see me in my car with my mouth shouting loud enough to hear outside, but otherwise looking normal and not in danger, please carry on.

Slanket vs. Snuggie

So my Facebook status of wanting a big blankie, a mug of something and the TV prompted blog-pal Sophie to suggest a Snuggie. "Well, Hells bells!" I gasped. Seems ol' Snuggie has taken the idea of the Slanket (something that has been on my wish list for ages due to it's $40+ price tag) and slashed the price in half. What?! Yeah, I know. Awesome.
Except for one thing. While the Snuggie site does boast a charming video, it just cannot compare to the amazing descriptions of color found on the Slanket site. Who wrote these? Where are they now? Can I buy them a cup of coffee while they sit toasty under a SlanketSnuggie?

so merritt and i sat down last night with some nummy friend chicken and a few tivoed episodes of jeopardy. it's been so long since we'd watching it (or at least since i had seen it), but leave it to alex to bring it old school and give one backhanded compliment after another to the 4(?) time winner meredith (who reminded us of ellen page in a non-annoying sort of way). at one point, during the "getting to know you" segment of the show, meredith told a sweet little story about her dad -- he would work the tv antenna to pick up the signal of a station that aired jeopardy half an hour earlier, so he would see the show and known all the answers before everyone else.* "i bet he never missed a final jeopardy -- unlike his daughter" laughed mr. trebek (of course that's not a direct quote, but close enough). wtf alex.

and speaking of trivia -- anyone who tells you that that old tjikko in sweden is the oldest living tree can suck it. it's a clone-tree (and pando's and older clone-tree anyway), so methuselah is still the granddaddy of them all.

and one final note: all you wii owners out there need to get cubello and world of goo. and then never sleep again.

so earlier this morning i was getting a little frazzled trying to figure out why it's the gambia and not just gambia. i understand the bahamas, the united states, but seriously? the gambia? i don't get it.
and true to jen form, i hit the internet for an answer. of course i still don't know the answer, but i did stumble upon something quite....scary?

as if we weren't already overly dependent on our friend wikipedia, turns out he has a younger, slower brother who suffers from a severe case of adhd, and his name is simple english wikipedia.
take for example the chernobyl disaster/accident. well, wiki calls it a disaster, has 88 "sources," and scrolls for roughly 24 screens (depending on your screen resolution and such). ~~retarded~~ simple wiki calls it an accident and sums the whole thing up into two whole paragraphs.

i am now even more frightened about the future.

so this weekend was the first one in many months that i actually went out for more than erranding. i'm getting to old for this...

friday cami and i took jennifer and lisa to top golf, the bestest place in the whole wide world. the guys at work have been going for a long time, but seeing as how i suck at everything sports-like (including my sucky ass fantasy soccer team), i never bothered to go, but when bo described it as a cross between golf and skee-ball, i was in. so i've been about 3 times in the past 2 weeks, and plan on making at least 2 more outings to top golf before the end of the week. who wants in?
btw, if you want to go, just print out this coupon and put me and my number (1069405) and you won't have to spend $5-$35 for a game card and we'll both get a free game -- hells yea! btw, they serve food and beer and are open til 11 every night.

saturday night we went to see les americains at the artist formerly known as the tea room. prophet bar my ass. i'm convinced that, because it's run by russell and the straight edge coalition, the hired the most inept bartender ever so that it would take on average 15-20 minutes to get a drink and we would all give up and go away. it was horrid. the service, not the band. i had no idea what they were going to sound like so i was going into it blindly, but i was quite impressed. two thumbs up -- people should check them out.

so i spent all day sunday recovering and watching all of season one of mad men. love. it. now merritt just needs to catch up so we can start season two...

Speaking of the Matt-tastic, though, I want to congratulate him and his lovely on their impending September nuptials! I've purchased a truckload of Kleenex and and waterproof mascara just for the occasion.

In other news, I'm a terrible blogger. My mid-year resolution is to stop over here more. In my lengthy absence from Alex, us DO music peeps busted out the Dallas Observer Music Awards issue, I got to go to an awesome narrative workshop in Archer City--where I was honored to meet THE Larry McMurtry, Texas' king of storytelling and I've inadvertently eaten cow's heart (just a peek at an upcoming food review). Now, with the timestamp urging me bed-ward, I'll say night-night and promise that I'll do my best to post more!!

it's the busy season around here. i have one more week left in summer I (yay for speed reading government) and then i'll get a couple of days off before summer II starts (government and algebra dammit), so who know how few and far between posts will be. bug merritt -- make her post more!

i have a new fascination with joe louis. i saw a documentary about him the other day and now i need to find his autobiography. i think i'm on a biography/documentary kick again, so if anyone has suggestions, let me know (keep in mind i probably won't be able to read for enjoyment til the end august).

i got wii fit the other day, and have mastered hula hooping, but that's about it. i have horrible balance. merritt, on the otherhand, is proof that the lessons from dance class never go away. speaking of which, do i have everyone's wii friend code?

on a more serious note, my dog lucy had surgery earlier this week to remove two mast cell tumors. she seems to be recovering well (though she's not digging the e-collar she has to wear when i'm not looking), and we'll get all of the test results back next week, so please keep your fingers crossed that we'll get good news.

speaking of which, i'm really not down for the whole summer/sun/heat thing. a week ago i was hanging out in the 40s, and now i'm back to already 100 degree days. craptastic.

the good news is that i got in to UNT, so i'll be enrolling in classes at the dallas campus in the fall after i finish up summer school at el centro. yay me! next winter i will finally get my degree -- it's only been 13 years in the making...

so, what's everyone's summer plans? who wants to go to soccer games with me!

so by this time tomorrow i'll be back in dallas.which will be a relief, because i'm exhaused as fuck. i only walk this much on vacations, but i'm fairly certain I won't have any delusions about walking more when i get home. not this lazy bitch!
Any way, i totally love it here (of course) and have somehow crammed a million thing into the past 3 days - if you name it, i probably did it. except for a cubs game - I just don't like baseball that much.

One thing about this town that I could do without - the non-smoking thing. You can't even smoke in bars for the love of god!

my short-lived summer is about to begin

miraculously i made it through my first semester back in school (an a in history and a b in algebra -- assholes), and i have about 3 weeks until summer school starts, so i'm going to use every spare second of this free time. blogging. playing games. sucking at typeracer (damn hifi). you know, the usual sort of stuff i do.

ah, but the happy part is that two weeks from today, i'll be in chicago! why chicago? well, much like my trip to montreal a while back, it was the most convenient/affordable place i haven't been. so if anyone has any tips/places to go/things to see, send them my way. and, if i can figure out how to blog from the comfort of my sweet little blackberry, then i will be able to keep you updated throughout!

working in the office that is predominately male, we usually end up having kitchen issues (especially since mirabel is out of town and there's no one to clean up after them at the moment), which leads to the occasional "clean up after yourselves please" notes/emails. see, it's nice around here -- we're catered to fairly well, what with free sodas and candy drawers and other ammenities -- so it seems that people think that there's a kitchen fairy that takes care of all the cleaning and stocking around here. not so, kind sirs.

so why do i bring this up? well, because earlier this morning james sent me this link in regards to the ever-constant soda problems everywhere, and now i'm totally obsessed with passiveagressivenotes.com, quite possibly one of me new favorite sites (along with apostrophe abuse). damn entertaining, i must say. though i should be working....

so, i know i haven't shown my face around here in quite a while. too much work/school/afi going on. i'm barely keeping up with my scrabulous games, so you're gonna have to cut me a little bit of slack. luckily school will be over soon. but then there's maymester/summer school/etc to look forward to. damn responsibilities.

so, what's new, you ask?
well....

deadliest catch starts tomorrow. we're still pretty upset that the rollo and my imaginary boyfriend corey still won't be back, but it doesn't matter -- it's still one of the bestest shows evar.

afi dallas was great -- totally worth it. lots of highlights and very few disappointents, so all in all, i'll totally do it again. and again. my list of upcoming recommendations for everyone: the little traitor, the visitor, the rest is silence, resolved, circus rosaire, public enemy: welcome to the terrordome, the wackness, and son of rambow. another bit of advice -- don't waste your time on fissure. i'm not even going to bother linking to the damn thing because it was so bad. there were plenty of other good movies, but i can't seem to think of any off the top of my head. though next year i fully intend to take advantage of that target lounge thing.

i have one more week of vacation to plan for. any suggestions? i'd like to get as far away from dallas as possible, and preferably use my passport in the most inexpensive way possible....

and for our craked.com update: 6 best shenanigans passed off as "art". yeah, you heard me. i'm sick of people pulling the art card out as a whim.

Thanks for all of the well wishes from everyone this past month or so concerning the healthy and recovery of my best friend covered in hair, Finn.

Unfortunately, Monday's surgery found him with a liver riddled with cancer. The vet said he had perhaps a month left with us and because of the surgery two weeks of that time would be spent in a crate healing. We were floored and defeated. Then I received a call to come quickly to the surgery center as he might not make it for another hour. Something happened after the surgery and while he'd been an excellent candidate for it, he'd gone into severe shock and hemorrhage.

God, Buddha, the universe, whatever, heard me and the little guy waited for me to get there. He responded slightly to my touches and thankfully never felt a thing as he was still under some influence from the anesthesia. I (along with Jen and my mom) stayed with him for maybe five minutes until he left. I've never been more grateful to be there for such a sad event.

That kitty was my companion for 10 years. Through hard break-ups, moves, deaths of relatives and friends, and more important, some of the happiest times ever. Unconditional and unassuming. We shared an amazing bond, communication (he came when he was called and would answer specific questions--really very smart) and he comforted me on a daily basis.

I know many folks will say that I'm silly to feel such loss and emotion after this, but I'm not going to discredit those feelings as, like my good friend Matt said, they signify a great unconditional love that some people just aren't capable of, a charity to the innocent and the ability to truly feel something for another (human or not).

Thank you to everyone who has sent messages, cards, flowers, a balloon and in general their love. I love you for it and it really helps. Otto and I are doing better everyday, trying to get used to one less in the house. It's hard to not have Finn wake me everyday like clockwork (just so he could make me stay in bed to cuddle), so if I rise a bit later for a few days, forgive me.

so they released the official sxsw line-up yesterday. i remember in high school/college when we would go all the time, but i think i'm just getting old or something because i really have no desire to go anymore. sure, i'd like to get the chance to see a few people, but now that the days of the $50 wristband are gone (along with my ability to deal with crowds), i think i will once again sit it out. besides, we're entering the busy season around here. sadly, with the shortage of local venues these days, who knows if we'll get the usual onslaught of shows as the bands go to and from austin, but gogol bordello will be here on my birthday so there's always hope.

don't fret though, cause i ain't upset. why, you ask? well, i've traded in my music festival goer membership card in exchange for the film fest variety. i enjoyed afi dallas so much last year that i'll be pulling out all the stops this year. yours truly will be taking off a week of work (along with brad and merritt) and will be sitting in dark rooms with strangers for hours on end. who wants to join us?!

so, roughly around 7:40 wednesday night, merritt and i sat around my apartment with our eyes going back and forth between the ugly reading vs. chelsea game and the even uglier alex trebek staring at us next to a countdown clock. we were pumped and ready to go for our online jeopardy contestant test. to bad we didn't actually do anything to prepare. sure, we did better than some (my weird fascination with the tudors came in handy as did my office's subscription to time magazine) but alas, we were thwarted by crap like ungulates and vicunas. you get 15 seconds per questions, which really isn't very much time to think and type. sadly, looking at the transcript, i only got 27 right. i suck. brain farts and stopwatch paranoia kept me from getting a couple more that i actually knew.

at least i know merritt got 2 that i didn't. maybe she'll make it to the next round of auditions and represent suck it accordingly.

she should be posting her update shortly....

Yeah, we sat in the same room shouting out answers and feverishly typing. I, for one, let forgetting to look at the category screw up at least two of my questions. One was concerning steroids. Hello, Mitchell report. Duh. Hopefully, they'll accept "Heisma" for Heisman Trophy since they claim partial and misspellings do often count. I should never have second guessed myself on where the Danube dumps out--my first instinct of Black Sea was right. Oh well.
Thanks to Jen for providing me with Bleak House. I returned the fave with sheer and Indonesia. I believe my total was 29 or 30 but I honestly can't remember what I put for the capital of Canada. Which also happens to be indicative of my freshman year of college.

ok, sure, it wasn't the most necessary purchase of the year, but, i gotta say, it was the best (remember, i got my wii last year). schmulen got one last week and, after playing with it for a bit, i went and got myself an eee pc friday night (mine's black). i loooooove it, as would any sane person. sure, it's not super-powerful/big/fit inside an inter-office envelope, bud damn if it isn't the bestest mini-computer ever. at less than 2 pounds, it can fit in my purse (literally) and does just about everything my home pc does with little effort. and don't let linux scare you -- it's super simple to use, but it is xp compatible if you insist on giving microsoft more of your money. love it. you know you want one.

as a side note, i have joined nerver in her love of top gear. yes, we are girls who watch shows about cars. go figure.

So I get this from my Dad:

There was a chemistry professor in a large college that had some exchange students in the class. One day while the class was in the lab, the prof noticed one young man, an exchange student, who kept rubbing his back and stretching as if his back hurt.

The professor asked the young man what was the matter. The student told him he had a bullet lodged in his back. He had been shot while fighting communists in his native country who were trying to overthrow his country's government and install a new communist regime.

In the midst of his story, he looked at the professor and asked a strange question. He asked: "Do you know how to catch wild pigs?" The professor thought it was a joke and asked for the punch line. The young man said that it was no joke.

"You catch wild pigs by finding a suitable place in the woods and putting corn on the ground. The pigs find it and begin to come everyday to eat the free corn. When they are used to coming every day, you put a fence down one side of the place where they are used to coming. When they get used to the fence, they begin to eat the corn again and you put up another side of the fence. They get used to that and start to eat again. You continue until you have all four sides of the fence up with a gate in the last side. The pigs, which are used to the free corn, start to come through the gate to eat that free corn again. You then slam the gate on them and catch the whole herd. Suddenly the wild pigs have lost their freedom. They run around and around inside the fence, but they are caught. Soon they go back to eating the free corn. They are so used to it that the y have forgotten how to forage in the woods for themselves, so they accept their captivity."

The young man then told the professor that is exactly what he sees happening in America. The government keeps pushing us toward Communism/Socialism and keeps spreading the free corn out in the form of programs such as supplemental income, tax
credit for unearned income, tax cuts, tax exemptions, tobacco subsidies, dairy subsidies, payments not to plant crops (CRP), welfare, medicine, drugs, etc. while we continually lose our freedoms, just a little at a time.

One should always remember two truths: There is no such thing as a free lunch and you can never hire someone to provide a service for you cheaper than you can do it yourself.

If you see that all of this wonderful government'help' is a problem confronting the future of democracy in America, you might want to send this on to your friends. If you think the free ride is essential to your way of life, then you will probably delete this email. But God help you when the gate slams shut!

I have to point out one thing that always bugs me when I read this. First of all, the exchange student compares what he's seen in his country to what the government here is doing? Then why would he move here to study after he fought it off?

One reason (which is conveniently lacking from the list of supposedly heinous handouts from the gov.): educational assistance. I have to applaud the government for what educational assistance they do provide. If anyone ever got a school grant, a gov. loan or even a scholarship, I can't really criticize the promotion of education.

On a side note: Drug assistance keeps both my mother and my grandmother in abusurdly expensive diabetes medication. It actually provides a little freedom where a disease has truly fenced them in.

So...I've decided to offer a new service, dear readers. After prodding from my sister and many of these forwards and responses with my Pops, I encourage anyone who has a hard time responding to their ultra-conservative (or, so we don't pigeon-hole here, generally unfounded and uneducated, which end up often being ultra-conservative in topic) parental forwards to submit the forward to me. I will be happy to supply family-appropriate responses on a first-come, first-served basis. This includes the Obama/Clinton assassination theory, the Obama pledge back-turning, really old anti-Sheehan propaganda that is somehow still floating around and lots of other things. I often include links to a variety of news media and not to toot my own horn, but after much hard work, my mom watches The Daily Show. Send 'em in, peeps. Send 'em in.

yup. i finally did it. i broke down and got myself a wii last night. and guitar hero. and super mario galaxy. sure, i stayed up all night last night but it was totally worth it. and, though i'm broke, i'm gonna have it say it's probably the best investment i've made since nigel. nerver and i were up way too late rockin out (damn a bunch of "cult of personality") but one of these days we're going to be badass, so everyone better watch out. and i'm not quite sure how this wii friends thing works, but let mii know if you're interested and we can be buddies.

btw -- if any of you locals have wii guitar hero, you need to come over so we can play co-op and unlock more songs. please and thank you!

and, becase we already know you spend all of your time on ~~myspace~~/facebook, you should head over to freerice and click away for a bit. more educational than tv trivia and bombing pirates, it's the perfect way for us online addicts to do something benificial for the rest of the world. if it says forkers (thanks sunny!) it has to be good....

ack, it's been crazy. now that i have entirely too much on my plate, i find myself making time in these parts. indeed. somehow i'm able to find extra time to do things when i feel overworked and underpaid. go figure.

my new-found love of soccer went awry this weekend when i watched fcd and reading both get beat 3-1. damn fools. jeffer's door felt the brunt of it that night, but i'm sure alvarez will be hurting for a bit longer...

the nano write-ins are going well (though none of you have bothered to show up). i'm only a couple hundred words short of where i should be, so, fingers crossed, it won't be such a pain this year.

and with all this going on, i'm somehow managing to catch up on my netflix -- finally. i need a break from all the "cheeriness" of my hong kong obsession -- any suggestions?

given that i work with entirely too many brits of varying degrees, i'm somewhat disappointed that bonfire night is something we don't celebrate here. perhaps we'll just drink beer, though it's not like we need an excuse for that.

things that i would throw into a bonfire:
- the entire houston dynamos team
- all my junk mail piling up in the corner
- my cell phone bill -- transatlantic calls can be pricy

i have joined the masses and now have dvr thanks to time warner (and the badass early cable guy). my television viewing is no longer tied to when nerver gets home -- yay me! i will never have to miss another episode of heroes or always sunny or project runway or anything else. ever. it's a whole new world -- now i just have to buy into that whole hd thing...

and this dvr entered my life at the perfect time, because nanowrimo starts in less than 13 hours and who knows when i'll have time to watch anything.... who's joining me?!?!

and for the happiest news of all, stars are playing at house of blues tonight, and it's not too late to get your tickets, so i expect some of you guys to show up. halloween schmalloween -- it comes around every year but stars don't, so you have no excuse (except for justin and shauna cause it's their anniversary and all...). jennifer and i will be there front and center (no, i'm not speaking in the third person) so get your asses out there.

yes, guys and gals, everyone's favorite time of year is here (and i'm not talking about halloween). thursday is the beginning of nanowrimo and you better get your butts in gear. in a last minute moment of insanity i volunteered to be the dallas aread municipal liaison, so i expect all of you locals to sign up (again?) this year so we can pretend to be productive, if only for a month.

the area kick off party is tomorrow at the two rows on greenville in old town from 2-5 p.m., which falls smackdab in the middle of fantasy party recovery and the fcd game and/or the show at doublewide, featuring fleetwood hack, blood on the moors, blow aces, and nightmare on e street.

yes, it's a busy weekend, but really it'll just be good practice for the frenzy we're about to experience...

a few things:

i know i haven't been around much lately. we've started a really big project at work and my promotion has now put me in charge of about a dozen contractors, so i've been pretty swamped. once it settles down i'll be able to find entertainment for you once again. pinky swear.

thanks to everyone who had well wishes for my mom over the weekend. though she doesn't seem to know how the wreck happened or how she even survived (oh yeah, she was in an accident on central saturday afternoon), she's doing well and is refusing her pain medication per usual (though she's not sharing it with me which seems to be a big waste). i suspect some deals with buddha have been made.

i need some of you fools to join my zombie army and play scrabulous with me. interested? then facebook me (or whatever the hip lingo for that friending action would be). yup. you know you want to.
